New English Translation

What Has Not Changed
The structure of the celebration of the sacrament, in all its forms, has not changed.

The order of the text has not changed. It remains:

• Chapter I: The Order for Reconciling Individual Penitents
• Chapter II: The Order for Reconciling Several Penitents with Individual Confession and Absolution
• Chapter III: The Order for Reconciling Several Penitents with General Confession and Absolution
• Chapter IV: Various Texts to Be Used in the Celebration of Reconciliation

What Is New
The words and language of the ritual text are different. Following the same practices used in the translations of the Roman Missal, the Order of Confirmation, etc., the language is closer in style and content to the Latin original.

Here are a few key examples:

Prayer of Absolution

“May use by” and “must use by” dates for the new ritual book
       The USCCB has established:

• February 22, 2023 (Ash Wednesday) as the date the new translation may begin to be used

• April 16, 2023 (Second Sunday of Easter / Divine Mercy Sunday) as the date it must be used

       After this final date no other translation of the rite may be used.

NOTE:

• At this time there is no new Spanish translation of the Ritual de la Penitencia
• Our bulk order will not be distributed in time for the “may use by” date, but will be in time for the “must use by” date.

Bulk order opportunity for diocesan parishes

• Below is a link to a pdf of a manual form for a diocesan-wide bulk order of these new ritual books, along with special pricing info from the four publishing companies which produce it for use in the dioceses of the United States. Use of this form is required.  Please print it out, fill it out, and:

• Completed order forms from diocesan parishes will be due at the chancery on Monday, February 13, 2023. 
• The new books will then be shipped from the publisher to the chancery
• Applicable shipping charges will be divided among participants in the bulk order and added to the invoices the chancery will send to participants on a per-copy basis.  Participants pay the diocese, the diocese pays the individual publishers and the shipping costs to Superior
• Copies will be available for distribution to parish representatives who attend either:
  • the 2023 Priests’ Assembly in Superior (March 26-28) 
  • the 2023 Chrism Mass in Superior (March 28) 

Our ability to offer participation in this diocesan bulk order ends on February 13, 2023.
 
Following that date all copies of this ritual book must be ordered by the parishes directly through the publisher. This would mean the copies ordered would be both shipped to and billed individually to the parish that orders them through their chosen publisher. (Copies ordered outside this diocesan bulk order would not be available for pick-up at the 2020 Priest Assembly/Chrism Mass.)
A special discounted price on the Magnificat edition must be in by Wednesday, January 4, 2023.  (The regularly priced volume is available for ordering through February 13.)
